Fluoride-Free Water Comes at a Great Cost to Dental Health

Updated: May 24

Fluoride has been getting a bad reputation in the past few years. People accuse it of being a dangerous chemical and of causing health issues in both adults and children. But the truth, and widespread scientific consensus based on decades of research, have proven that fluoride is important, even crucial, for dental health. With that being said, there are benefits to fluoride free water for babies. This is not because it filters out fluoride, but because properly filtered water can help protect your baby from water that isn’t pure enough.

Fluoride-Free Water Comes at a Great Cost to Dental Health

Currently, over 60 percent of the American population has access to fluoridated water. That is, the average person has water that is combined with a small amount of fluoride already flowing through their taps. Combined with the fluoride, we find in most toothpaste and dental cleaning substances; the average person has plenty of access to fluoride. If you do have fluoride-free water for your babies and you, however, your dentist may prescribe supplements for you and your children.

According to KidsHealth, “the American Dental Association (ADA), the United States Public Health Service (USPHS), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the World Health Organization (WHO), among many other national and international organizations, endorse community water fluoridation.” Even the CDC endorses water fluoridation, calling it one of the 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century. So maybe fluoride-free water for babies isn’t the be-all-end-all?

Why is Water Fluoridation Controversial?

While almost everyone who has fluorinated water and uses toothpaste with fluoride benefits from lower rates of tooth decay (an average of 20-40 percent decrease), there is the possibility of having too much of a good thing. If someone has an excessive amount of fluoride, which usually comes through a combination of fluoride supplements and consuming an excessive amount of substances with high levels of fluoride, problems can occur. For most, an excess, ironically enough, comes in the form of tooth decay, but in a very few limited and extreme cases, it can also cause issues with bone strength. That is why it is recommended that you use fluoride-free water for babies.

Of course, these instances are so rare and require such an excess of fluoride that the small amount found in water is an exceptional health benefit. It still makes sense to use fluoride-free water for babies so you can control how much fluoride they are taking in—but it isn’t the end of the world if they drink a little water that might contain typical levels of fluoride.

Fluoride-Free Water for Babies

When it comes to your baby, fluoride-free water can be beneficial, but not because it is free of fluoride. Often, fluoride-free water, like Bay Bay Water, is beneficial for babies and other sensitive people because it actually helps control the other potentially dangerous minerals that can occur in tap water or unfiltered water. The truth is that, while over half the amount of water flowing through America’s taps has fluoride, a lot of it also has other issues that could potentially harm your baby, either in the short-term or in the long-term. This can include lead poisoning, the buildup of minerals, and other issues. That is why many parents choose to use distilled and purified water for their babies.

If you are looking for clean, healthy water for your baby, choose Bay Bay distilled water. This fluoride-free water for babies can help keep your baby healthy. Be sure to discuss fluoride with your dental professional in case you need to start supplementing your child with fluoride while using distilled water.
